Dilated Peoples - 20/20

Dilated Peoples, that’s DJ Babu (producer), Evidence (rapper/producer) and Rakaa Iriscience (rapper), are back at the game with their fourth album, 20/20. Two years after undeground hip hop crew Dilated Peoples dropped Neighborhood Watch, and because of the disappointments of their third album, they were able to return to the sound their known for that got them their original fame. This undeground hip hop album is 12 tracks, including the skits, and is filled with hot tracks. A majority of the production was handled by DJ Babu and Evidence with guest appearances by Alchemist and Joey Chavez on several tracks. “DJ Babu’s soulful, pyrotechnic turntablism straddles the indie-mainstream divide,” Spin Magazine writes. The underground hip hop album’s lead single, “Back Again”, wasn’t able to make a strong punch, due to MTV refusing to show the music video, because of a scene where Rakaa Iriscience wears a bulletproof vest. Good job MTV..

NOW Magazine writes, “the record is rife with brow-raising darts and the mindblowing beats to match, outstripping the last two Dilated records and threatening the alignment of your neck vertebrae in the process. Fresh horror soundtrack samples, crusty soul breaks and pianos galore cut together courtesy of DJ Babu’s tornado scratches provide continued justification for Dilated’s condescending attitude toward other weaker rap groups.”
